Leadership & Educational Initiatives
- Actively involved in American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI) via committee membership and conference organization.
- Proposed and organized five sessions (20 podium presentations) for the 2009 Congress, four sessions (19 podium presentations) plus a poster session for the 2010 Congress, and three sessions (12 podium presentations) plus a poster session for the 2011 Congress. All sessions were under the Water Resources Planning and Management Council.
- Served on the Technical Program Committee for the 2012 EWRI Congress. My role was to oversee the organization of six tracks (50 sessions) out of the 21 tracks (180 sessions) to be included in the conference. In addition, I served as track chair for the Water Resources Planning and Management Council, for which I organized 16 sessions running the length of the conference. I also served as co-chair of the GV Loganathan Symposium with three sessions devoted to research in line with activities of the late Dr. Loganathan who was among those killed at Virginia Tech in April 2007.
- Served as track chair for the Water Resources Planning and Management Council, and on the Technical Program Committee for the 2013 EWRI Congress. I was responsible for organizing one track consisting of 1 panel discussion, 8 sessions of podium presentations (40 papers), and a poster session (26 papers), and for overseeing the organization of four additional symposia consisting of a total of 26 sessions (129 papers), plus 43 poster presentations.
- Served as part of the Control Group for the Environmental Water Resources Systems committee under the Water Resources Planning and Management Council, May 2013-May 2017.
- Served as co-chair of the Technical Program Committee for the 2015 EWRI Congress. Responsible for overseeing abstract/paper submission and review and organizing all concurrent sessions of the congress.
- Served as chair/editor of the Task Committee on Statistical Applications in Hydrology, which was formed under the Surface Water Hydrology Technical Committee of the Watershed Council (EWRI), May 2012-December 2015. The main objective of the committee is to review published literature and summarize the development of new concepts and statistical methods for application in hydrologic science and engineering. Specific areas to which statistics are applied include temperature, humidity, radiation, rainfall, evaporation, evapotranspiration, runoff, infiltration, ground water, low flows and droughts, high flows, erosion, sedimentation, and water quality. Chapters covering these technical areas have been assembled to create a monograph, Applications of Statistical Distributions in Hydrologic Sciences and Engineering, which should be available Fall 2018.
- Associate Editor of American Society of Civil Engineers Journal of Hydrologic Engineering October 2012-June 2016.
- Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative advisory board member Fall 2013-Spring 2014. Reviewed and provided feedback to K-12 educators on grant proposals to receive funding to support stewardship activities by their students/schools.
- Involved with the Modular Curriculum for Hydrologic Advancement (MOCHA), an NSF sponsored initiative to create course modules on various topics related to watershed hydrology in order to improve the effectiveness and quality of instruction at the undergraduate level while reducing the time needed to develop new course material for young faculty. Worked with collaborators, Dr. Stacey Archfield (U.S. Geological Survey) and Dr. Lucy Marshall (Montana State University), to develop a course module for Stochastic Hydrology which is freely available via the MOCHA website. November 2011-December 2012.
